My wedding story began the day Derek asked me to be his wife. We were headed to Shuswap Lake, to spend the day on the water. We hopped on the boat for a few hours doing our favorite outdoor activities – Derek fishing and me sun tanning. He had not caught any fish yet and wanted to switch things up, and as his co-captain, he asked me to pass him a certain fishing reel. As I reached for the reel case, I saw a little box inside and thought to myself- OH MY GOD! I burst out crying while Derek laughed as I opened the box and saw the most beautiful ring ever. He made it official and asked if I would marry him. Of course I said yes! I had no doubt I was going to marry him from our very first date, a year and a half ago. I couldn‘t wait to be his wife! When we started talking about our destination wedding, it was places like Hawaii, Costa Rica or Greece. We both loved to travel, we both love the ocean and we both love the sun. The only concern Derek had was ‘will there be good deep sea fishing?!’ I, on the other hand, took into consideration the travel time, language barriers, was it child and senior friendly? Would the location be easy to get to? To be honest, before finding our specialist, I had spent months researching and had actually even booked our wedding in Maui. The cost of that wedding kept going up and up, along with my stress level, and we ended up cancelling it. There was no way planning your wedding should have to be this stressful and complicated. This should be a happy time. A few weeks after cancelling the Maui wedding, I went in to see Ryan Bullock at Wedding Butlers. He recommended different locations, ones he had actually been to. He explained the pro’s and con’s of every aspect and how his service worked. Derek and I booked our wedding date right then and there! In just eight short months, we would be saying our vows in the Mayan Riviera at the NOW Jade resort. We could have everything we wanted and still be within our budget! It was a no-brainer. Ryan does all the travel arrangements for everyone in the wedding group, he travels with you to your destination wedding and makes sure everything runs smoothly. We had 45 guests, all with different personalities. “Stuff” is bound to happen. Do you want to deal with that? Heck no! There is only one thing a bride should be worrying about – to make sure you’re not grinning so hard you have a double chin in the wedding pics. Ryan was waiting for us at the hotel when we arrived and helped us check in – the smoothest check-in I have ever experienced. He took us to our room and not only was there champagne waiting for us, we were quite surprised to see we were upgraded to a suite courtesy of Wedding Butlers! Ryan took us around the resort, showed us where everything was. The entire hotel was incredible. Everyone’s rooms were huge! The staff was friendly and accommodating. The variety of restaurants were great – we loved Spice! The entertainment team were fabulous! We participated in activities with them every day – volleyball, mechanical bull-riding, Zumba and bike rides. Ryan came with us to meet with the hotel wedding co-ordinator to finalize the wedding plans. Because of Ryan‘s previous wedding experiences, he already knew the coordinator and this too went problem-free. He made sure all the little details were not forgotten, which can happen so easily with so much excitement going on. On the day of the wedding, Ryan kept everything running smoothly. Getting us girls to the 7:30am hair appointments, finding the grooms lost shirt (which I didn’t know about until after!), finding my sister who wasn’t staying at the hotel and then getting everyone seated! He was just always in the background, hardly seen but there for whatever was needed! A man version of a fairy godmother! The highlight of my day was doing a ‘First Look’ photo shoot, and having a private moment with Derek before the ceremony. Seeing the look on Derek’s face when he saw me in my dress still makes me emotional. And the fact that Aaron captured those moments is so special. A great part of the vacation was a private catamaran cruise with the group to Islas Mujeres. The crew was amazing! Made us feel so special! We went snorkelling, danced on the boat, we had lunch and the continued margaritas flowed! One of the highlights on the cruise was when my mother learned how to ‘gangnam style’. It was some of the clearest, brightest water I have ever seen. So beautiful! Such a fun and memorable day! It was perfection to have the week with our family and friends, we were surrounded with love and it was a blast to be on a group vacation. After the week, our guests left, and Derek and I headed to an adult only resort about twenty minutes away for our honeymoon. This hotel was equally as amazing, the view from our room would take your breath away. And yes, Derek could fish here too. We were treated to a romantic dinner on the beach topped off with coming back to our room covered in rose petals, hearts and a bubble bath! I wouldn’t change a thing about the whole experience.
